A child was seriously injured this morning after being hit by a car on Des Moines' east side near the State Fairgrounds.

Police responded to the 3600 Block of E University Avenue and found a child with serious injuries. The child was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.

DMPD says preliminary evidence indicates the boy unexpectedly ran into the road.

The driver involved attempted to stop and steer away, but was unable to avoid colliding with the child.

Police continue to investigate this crash.
