Central Iowa Cities Seek Updated Population Count with Special Census

(DES MOINES, IA) -- At least five central Iowa cities are conducting special census counts this summer to get updated population figures.

Officials in Altoona, Clive, Grimes, Johnston, and West Des Moines say the counts are needed because of significant growth since the 2020 census. The goal is to increase their share of state Road Use Tax Funds, which could result in millions of additional dollars for infrastructure and street maintenance.

Several other metro communities saw significant funding increases after conducting similar special censuses last year.
