(Des Moines, IA) — The severe thunderstorms that swept across Iowa this morning knocked out power for thousands of people.

As of 8 A.M., MidAmerican Energy is reporting about 2,000 customers without power in Central Iowa, with more than 1,500 of those in Norwalk.

At the height of the early morning storms, Alliant Energy also reported about 3,000 customers without power, with outages affecting Newton, Marshalltown, and Melbourne, but most were restored in about an hour. As of now, only a few hundred Alliant Energy customers remain without power.

Crews are in the field this morning working to restore electricity.
