(Iowa City, IA) -- A University of Iowa professor is helping NASA study the potential of life on Mars.

Valerie Payré of the School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability at UI, says she's focused on one of the red planet's rivers.

Payré says her work with NASA and the Perseverance rover is revealing possibilities of ancient life inside a rock sample.

Researchers claim it is the only place on Mars where evidence of chemical reactions associated with life could have been happening at one point.

NASA is looking at two retrieval methods to bring samples back to Earth by 2030 for further testing.
