(Des Moines, IA) -- High winds Wednesday morning left many people in the dark, knocking out power around Central Iowa.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Brooke Hagenhoff says wind gusts of 66 miles an hour were clocked at the Des Moines International Airport.

The winds made travel a bit hazardous, although visibility wasn't substantially impacted in the metro by the light snow showers that fell overnight.

MidAmerican Energy reported up to two thousand customers lost power during the early morning hours, according to the utility's outage map.

Most of the outages occurred in Des Moines, and in Madison and Warren Counties.

Hagenhoff says light snow is expected Thursday and again on Saturday. Temperatures over the weekend are expected to drop into the single digits.
