Iowa's only nuclear plant is one step closer to coming back online.

The Linn County Planning & Zoning Commission is recommending a rezoning application for the Duane Arnold Nuclear Energy Center in Palo, just northwest of Cedar Rapids.

The Linn County Board of Supervisors will review the request at a series of public meetings in January.

If re-zoning is approved, and the plan passes federal regulatory review, the nuclear plant could be back online by 2029.

The nuclear plant's owner, NextEra Energy, has a 25-year deal to supply power from the facility to Google's new Cedar Rapids data centers.
