Iowa wild plums, walnuts, hazelnuts in demand

The State Forest nursery near Ames is paying cash for walnuts, hazelnuts, and wild plums this year.   Kandy Weigel tells WHO-Radio News they hope to get 3,000 walnuts this year, and they'll pay $2.50 per bushel.

They're also accepting hazelnuts and wild plums, paying $30 per bushel for each.

Those wishing to drop off walnuts can do so on Mondays and Fridays, during regular hours of 8-4:30.

Those wishing to drop off hazelnuts and/or wild plums are asked to call the State Forest Nursery first.

Weigel says walnuts can be accepted in the husk.

She says Stephens State Forest near Chariton and Yellow River State Forest in Allamakee County may also accept walnuts, but it's best to call first.
