Cedar Rapids Man Gets Maximum Prison Term for Puppy Abuse

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A man in Cedar Rapids is getting the maximum two years in prison on an animal abuse charge.

Police say 22-year-old Jayden Cliff grabbed a puppy by the neck and threw it against a wall for defecating on a bed, and then kicked it when it continued to defecate on the floor.

The 12-week-old golden retriever received two broken legs and a crushed paw, but has since recovered.

The Linn County Attorney said she pushed for a prison term to serve as a deterrent for others.

The puppy - named Kimble - became somewhat of a celebrity in the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City area after media coverage of the abuse.

Kimble was taken in by Critter Crusaders, a non-profit animal shelter and rescue center, which published photos of the dog on Facebook.

Social media fundraising brought in $15,000 for Kimble’s medical treatment.
