(Des Moines, IA) -- Des Moines Public Schools students will have to wear face masks through December.

At Tuesday's school board meeting Superintendent Tom Ahart said he doesn't think the appeal process involving Iowa's mask mandate ban will be done by the end of the year.

The school district's mask requirement goes into effect today.

Not all school districts have implemented a mask mandate quite yet.

The Ankeny School District is trying to decide if it will require students to wear face masks now that Iowa's mask mandate ban is blocked.

The school board held a special meeting Tuesday where dozens of parents showed up to listen but were unable to voice their opinions.

The school district says it will make a decision either later this week or next week and parents will be allowed to speak before the decision is made.

Some schools in the Iowa City district will require masks starting today.

The Clear Creek-Amana School District is waiting to decide whether or not students will have to wear face masks in class.

The school board held a meeting Tuesday where board members considered dozens of comments from parents.

The school district says it will wait to make a decision on masks until a final ruling is made on Iowa's law banning mask mandates in schools.
