Nebraska Audit Finds State Retirement System Problems

A new audit report finds eleven people still receiving Nebraska state retirement benefits after they died.

"In one case, the death happened in 2014, and they were continuing to receive payments up until 2021," Nebraska Deputy State Auditor Craig Kubicek told KFAB Radio News.

Kubicek says that case alone totaled about $100-thousand dollars, and is being investigated for the possibility of fraud.

Many of the other cases are unreported deaths.

The money totals about a quarter - of - a million dollars in retirement payments for deceased judges, Nebraska State Patrol personnel , and school staff.

Kubicek says they are using a new method to cross-check retirement benefits to find people who may have died.
