(Marion, IA) -- The Linn-Mar Community School District's board is voting to approve policies protecting transgender students from discrimination.

The policies, including allowing transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms associated with their identity, passed with a 5-to-2 vote. About eighty residents signed up to make public comments on the issue at Monday night's meeting, both for and against the policies. The board says the approval is partly to avoid the possibility of a future gender-discrimination lawsuit.

The district says the passed policies have already been in use in Linn-Mar schools for years.
