The 'I-80 Pipeline' Remains Active

A traffic stop leads to a large drug bust in Lancaster County earlier this week.

Investigators say Sheriff's Deputies stopped a rental van on I-80 and detected the odor of marijuana.

They say a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 1,144 pounds of marijuana with a street value of more than 2.3 million dollars.

"We've been taking drugs and illegal contraband off of I-80 since its inception," Nebraska State Patrol Captain Matt Sutter tells KFAB Radio News, "and the game really hasn't changed alot over the years."

Sutter says, "We're seeing greater amounts than we used to see, but at the end of the day, it's a supply and demand issue, and there is a demand for illegal narcotics. That product has to get from Point A to Point B, and I-80 is just one of the many corridors that it happens to flow through."

The Lancaster County Sheriff's office says 43 year - old Daniel Cardinel of Forsyth, Missouri was booked for possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.
