Polk City Forms Committee to Plan Park Complex

Construction underway in the area of a proposed Polk City park.

(Polk City, IA) -- Polk City, northwest of Ankeny, has formed a new park committee after voters rejected a bond referendum for another plan last November.

"I think the goals are to have this group come together and work on a number of ideas, meeting with different people who could tell us different things about how we go forward," said Steve Karsjen, Mayor of Polk City. He says the group's findings would ultimately be brought before the city council.

Karsjen says the 57-acre site near the new Big Creek Elementary school is already owned by the city. Plans would be to construct two baseball and softball fields, pickleball courts, tennis courts, a concession stand, and even a couple of ponds.

"There's a little over a mile of walking trail out there as well. None of it is all that dramatic, it's just things we could really use and need in Polk City." He says the new Polk City Junction bike trail is slated to run through the area, with completion expected in 2026.

Karsjen says planners of the park are shifting to a partnership between the city and public for fundraising purposes, with an expected $10 million to $12 million needed for completion.

Around 500 new residential lots are slated for construction in the area surrounding the site. Polk City has experienced an 18 percent growth rate, roughly 1,000 people since 2020, according to a recent census.
