(Des Moines, IA) -- Police are releasing more information about an officer‑involved shooting that led to the discovery of a dead body on Des Moines’ south side.

Officers were called to The Flats on 5th apartments on SE 5th Street for a welfare check after a father reported he could not reach his adult daughter and believed she was having problems with her boyfriend.

When officers arrived, management unlocked the apartment after repeated knocking went unanswered. A 33‑year‑old man armed with a knife attempted to attack the father, then charged toward an officer. The officer fired, and despite life‑saving efforts, the man died at the scene.

During the continued welfare check, officers found a 33‑year‑old woman dead inside a bedroom.

The officer involved has been placed on administrative assignment as police continue to investigate.
