(Des Moines, IA) -- The City of Des Moines will host of public open house next week on the 31st Street safety improvement plan.

The event will present proposed safety improvements along 31st Street, including adding mini roundabouts at 31st Street and Cottage Grove and 31st Street and Woodland Avenue. The city says 31st Street has been identified as a high-risk corridor, and those two intersections alone have seen 52 crashes combined over the past five years.

The plan is part of the city's broader Vision Zero initiative designed to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries. The open house is scheduled for Tuesday, April 21st from 5pm-6:30pm at Callanan Middle School, located at 3010 Center Street in Des Moines. The event will include concept plans of the proposed mini roundabouts, information on how similar roundabouts have been implemented in other communities, as well as crash data and a High Injury Network overview.
