(Des Moines, IA) -- The Polk County Attorney rules that two police officers were legally justified in the fatal shooting of a 33-year-old man during a welfare check last month in Des Moines.
Officers were called to an apartment on March 24 after a father reported he was unable to get in contact with his daughter. According to investigators, when police entered the apartment, Zakar Jeffrey advanced toward officers while holding a knife.
One officer attempted to retreat before firing eight shots. Jeffrey was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police also found 33-year-old Martasha McKenzie dead inside the apartment.
No charges will be filed.
