(Iowa) -- Iowa’s primary elections have determined the two candidates who will compete for the state’s open U.S. Senate seat.
Josh Turek won the Democratic nomination, while Ashley Hinson secured the Republican nomination. The seat is open after Senator Joni Ernst announced she will not seek re-election following two terms in office.
On the Democratic side, Iowa State Representative Josh Turek and State Senator Zach Wahls faced off in a closely watched primary. In the Republican race, current U.S. Representative Ashley Hinson chose not to run for another term in the House in order to pursue the Senate seat. Hinson received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump. Sioux City attorney Jim Carlin also entered the race for the nomination.
Josh Turek won the Democratic nomination with roughly 63% percent of the vote, while Ashley Hinson won the Republican nomination with nearly 74%. The two candidates will face off in the general election on November 3rd.
The full breakdown of the election results is available on the Iowa Secretary of State's website.
