(Prairie City, IA ) -- A rare white bison born in May in Central Iowa, has died.
The Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in Prairie City made the announcement today. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and its partners are investigating the circumstances surrounding the calf’s death. Experts say the chances of a bison born white in color are one in a million.
In a Facebook post, the center said, "We recognize the cultural significance that a white bison holds for many tribal nations and are working to communicate with them in a timely and respectful manner."
