(Des Moines, IA) -- The Des Moines Police Department was temporarily evacuated Sunday after a suspicious package was left in the building’s lobby.
“We had a suspicious package delivered to the information desk here at the police department. A gentleman walked in, set it down, didn’t give us much indication of what was in it, walked away, and as we got to examining it, looking at it, it had some writings on it that caused us a little bit of concern. The package didn’t feel right,” said Sergeant Paul Parizek, Des Moines Police Department.
Parizek says officers secured the building, cleared the area, and called in the bomb squad. The bomb squad determined the package wasn’t dangerous and was able to safely remove it.
The incident comes 56 years after a bomb left outside the department detonated, causing significant damage.
