Jeff Angelo: Would A Wall Actually Stop Border Crossers?

Title 42 is a public health order that was implemented by the Trump administration in March 2020 to expel migrants at the US-Mexico border during the COVID-19 pandemic. The order allowed the US to rapidly expel migrants without giving them a chance to seek asylum, even if they were fleeing violence or persecution in their home countries.

The Biden administration has said that it will end Title 42 on Thursday.

Here are some of the potential consequences of the expiration of Title 42:

An increase in the number of migrants attempting to cross the US-Mexico border.

A backlog in the asylum system, as the US government struggles to process and adjudicate the increased number of claims.

Increased tensions between the US and Mexico, as the two countries grapple with the challenges of managing the increased flow of migrants.

A humanitarian crisis, as migrants who are unable to enter the US are forced to remain in Mexico or return to their home countries.

Republicans in the US House are expected to approve a border protection bill this week in advance of the expected surge in migrants. Jeff talks to Chris Chmielenski of NumbersUSA about the contents of the bill and whether it will work - including a question as to if a border wall will actually keep people out.
