Big changes in Education are coming after education Bills including the one from the Governor, survived Funnel week in Iowa's State House.
The so-called "Bathroom Bill" would require kids in schools to use the bathroom and locker room that corresponds with their biological sex. You can read that HERE.
The second Bill is much larger and is from the Governor.
This one does a number of things including detailing what education requires parental permission and also deals with books.
In addition to that, the Bill also does the following:
- Schools required to inform parents if their kid expresses a different gender identity than what's on their birth certificate.
- Parents would need to give written permission for teachers to call their kid a different name.
- All discussion of gender identity or sexual activity would be banned in Kindergarten through 5th-grade classrooms and inside school buildings.
“I can’t believe that we are even having to have a discussion about sexually explicit materials in the hands of school kids. It is pornography,” State Senator Sandy Salmon said
Meanwhile my State Senator said “You can access tremendous amounts of pornography in your home or your home computer. This has nothing to do with school libraries.” I'm so proud that Democrat Claire Celsi represents me!.
To survive the next funnel, both Bills would need debate on the Senate floor before March 31 which is very likely to happen.
